unit 5 essay

Once upon a time in the west

Once upon a time in the west- Essay

A lot of instruments have been use in the opening scene of once upon a time in the west. As it is a western film the sounds reflect the setting of the scene from the film. The sounds used in this opening scene contains of some kind of squeaking sound made into a tune type thing, Stomping, Water splashing, wind, squeaky chair, rattling, wildlife (birds e.g.), fly, heavy breathing, coughing, gun hitting wood, fly flying around, coal train, a man drinking water and a train breaking.

There is a range of different volumes of sound in this film. The over all sound at the begging was a neutral squeaking sound made into a kind of tune that sets the scene of the film. There are dramatic seconds in the film where the sound gets louder, for example there is a scene where a character rips a wire out of the wall and another scene where he hits a fly on a piece of wood. These sounds are much louder than the neutral sound of the squeaking, they also play with the character.

The sounds do reflect the characters. The character doing these actions is a bad guy. The sounds are loud that represent bad, if they were quieter and less sudden then the character wouldn’t be reflected as such bad character. Every time a new character is shown in the opening scene the sound around them gets a lot louder and dramatic. Some kind of sound is also happening when introducing a character, weather it be a water leak or a dog or a fly. All of the men have guns as well and this represents them being the bad guys. The train then loudly comes into the scene, setting the scene for the story that is about to begin.

When it comes to the mood of the film, when there is the neutral sound you feel a lot calmer but then when the characters are introduced with the louder sounds you feel a lot more alert. From the opening I feel that the mood is meant to be calm and lazy. There isn’t a lot happening and everyone is just relaxing and waiting for the train to come in. After the train has come in its then that the mood changes to being more awake and serious.

In insidious a very spooky sound used throughout the opening credits and it sets the film off to an incredibly creepy start. The sound/ used is made out of a violin and other stringed instruments with the occasional slight drum sound. The sound is loud and very high pitch. Scaring any viewer watching this film. It is the perfect opening sound for a horror movie completed with spooky black and white images of inside a house. The begging opening scene is completed with snoring when the main character is in bed and when she gets up there is squeaking from floor bored and her going though various boxes from her family just moving into a new house.

The loud noises really do indicate that this is a horror film and it is meant to scare you. The sound is loud and ear hurting. When the film actually starts it is meant to be more settled, but they still use loud sounds when something happens, like with the floor boards, a crying baby or a kettle being boiled.

The sounds reflect the bad characters and the bad situation in the film but it doesn’t reflect on the main characters of the film. The sounds in this film are mainly used to freak you out more than anything.

The mood in this film is created by the sounds. You are meant to feel scared and on edge and this film really does achieve that. The sound at the opening scene is especially successful for this.

Unit 6 Evaluation

I think that the work for unit 6 could have been so much better if  had spent more time on it. The planning wasn’t completely accurate as Damien and I had to keep on changing the story line. I think that if I were to do it again I would definitely keep up with the work more and have everything in a good order.

The film i know could have been so much better if we had more time to do it. towards the end of the project Damien and I were majorly stressing because scenes that we had used before were either not up to our standers and Damien kept on changing what he was wearing and his hair so we could have a miss match film. I think that the interactive side threw us a bit as well as we were getting confused with the different endings that we had. The good parts though is that we had everything we needed for the film and we used a range of different angle shots.

The sound effects that we used in the film I think were good and spot on for what we needed. We imported clips from sound snap to make our film more realistic.

skills log

In my photography lessons I have learnt all about Mise En Scene by doing theory work and practical work. In the practical work we had to go into the studio and take photos of each other using the camera and the different lighting techniques that we had learnt about previously.  these pictures are an example of hard light.

A lot of editing I learnt about on the first couple of weeks of media but at the beginning of this project I have been taught editing skills again to ensure I  know how to do it correctly. I have learnt how to make the interactive side of the film and I learnt the different shot angles by doing an exercise of a shot scene of a film that the class worked on.

In photo shop I have learnt how to do a choice menu so that the viewers of the film can choose what path they want to follow. The viewer is to click on yes or no with weather they want to carry on watching the film or not.

In my sound lesson I have learnt how to add sounds into films and how they make the film sound so much better and much more professional. I also watched Once upon a time in the west and learnt about the sounds in the begging scene of that film

Unit 7 (5) Evaluation

The project i have had to do has been challenging as I didn’t take media to do film making as I am more into photography and the theory side of it.

Although filming wasn’t something that I was particularly interested in I did have fun filming and trying the editing. I’ve liked learning about props and lighting in my photography lessons and being able to film in my other lessons has been good and useful as well.

I did have some problems with the project however. the group i was in ( Damien and I) was good as we spend 90% of our time together anyway so we always could film without a problem but we have still struggled to finish in time and have had to have extra time to finish. Although the timing for the project was slightly difficult due to personal issues that made me struggle with attending some classes. I think that despite my personal issues Damien and I have still managed to finish in time, only having to take a week extra from the deadline. Another thing that me and Damien have struggled with is sticking to one story line. we have had to change it multiple times because the plans that we had were either too challenging for someone our level of work or we definitely wouldn’t have been able to manage it in the time length.

Other than those bad points everything else has gone okay, we have had access to a camera for the whole time and we been able to get to the location and use the props we need without access. the work that we have produced I think is good for workers of our level but I do think that we need to work more on time management.

the sound I think is the best thing out of the film. It all relates to a horror film and it leave the audience with a sense of being creeped out instead of happy with let’s say a comedy. I think that creating the beginning, opening scene for the film did make it a lot better and it already got the audience into the mind of a horror film before the film fully begun.

If there was something that I would do differently next time it would be make sure that we planned more efficiently and we sort out what we need to do earlier on.

unit 7 (3) Planning

Location- Attic and woods

Props- Ouija board

Genre- Horror

Basic storyline:

Character exploring attic

Spots Ouija board

Starts playing the board

Ouija bored starts replying

Weird/ unexplainable things start to happen

Have to destroy board

More complex storyline:

-Boy goes up to explore the attic

-While exploring he discovers Ouija board (high pitch screaming sound is heard)

-He beings playing the board, not considering the rules

-sits down and tries to contact spirit.

-noises heard in other side of attic, tis ignored and the character carries on playing

-stereo starts playing by itself, slowly turns demonic

-goes up to stereo and picks it up and examines it, checks batteries, none in there however the light is still on but goes quiet for a bit then loud noise suddenly happens.

-launch stereo away

-Damien gets possessed.

The interactive side is deciding to yes or no, playing the board, weather you want to carry on the film, carry on playing or check the noise out. (cat run if checked out, thing thrown if not)

props and characters:

Ouija board

old radio

old stuff in attic

cat screeching

attic stairs falling down

boxes being moved

breaking bones

moving sound for ouija bored

earey ghost sounds

fain sounds of children talking/ screaming

Damien talking

clutter being moved about in the attic

Ghostly sound enters attic

these are the sounds that I am most likely going to be using in the film. I think that they all link in with aspect of horror and they are also known sounds in horror film  , especially the music. If I were to be using  happy music it wouldn’t suit into being a horror film and the audience would be confused with what was happening. All of the sounds in the list and looking at the plan of my film, I think that these are going to definitely be used to try and create the perfect horror that I have in my head.
